Common error messages, and what they mean
If you see one of these, paste the message into the form below. It often shows us straight away where the problem is.
Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.
The editor can't save. Often a security plugin or a hosting setting is blocking WordPress's internal communication.
First step: Deactivate your security and caching plugins one by one, and try saving again. Also re-save the Permalinks settings.
wp_mail_failed
WordPress can't send email, so order and form emails don't go out. The solution: send through SMTP, using a real mailbox.
First step: Install an SMTP plugin and set it up with the details of a real mailbox. Then send a test email from the plugin.
509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
Your hosting traffic or resource limit has run out. This is often caused by bot traffic, not real visitors.
First step: Check your hosting statistics to see where the traffic comes from. If bots are using up the limit, a firewall (for example Cloudflare) helps a lot.
403 Forbidden
The server is blocking the site or part of it, typically because of a security rule or a permission setting.
First step: If you recently set up a security plugin or a hosting rule, undo that first.
Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance
An update was interrupted, and the site is stuck in maintenance mode.
First step: Delete the .maintenance file from the WordPress root folder, via FTP or your hosting file manager. Then check whether the update finished.
Error establishing a database connection
The site can't reach the database. It may be a configuration error or a problem with the hosting's database server.
First step: Check the database details in the wp-config.php file, and check in your hosting control panel that the database is running.
